The value that ACHPP brings is through exposure, opportunity, and structure. We show young people that we care about their success. They just have to walk the path.

When I was growing up, we had a principal, guidance counselors, and mentors in the community who encouraged us to go to college and helped make it available for us. When I came back to this area after being away at college, it seemed like that mentoring was no longer available.

I felt like it was my responsibility to give back and offer those opportunities to young people.

I’ve worked for the Workforce Development Board for over 20 years. We help young people who are disconnected, mostly low-income young people of color. The Workforce Boards in our region have identified high-growth and high-wage sectors—like health care—that we want to focus on to build talent.

I reached out to ACHPP to become a partner because they work with youth and that is my passion. Through the Pathways, we give them opportunities to try a career. They don’t actually have to go into health care. But if you have an opportunity you can try it and see if you like it.
